It does seem that neither linux-next, nor the scsi-devel trees have
applied any sort of patch that would use simple_open. My guess is that
all the members of fnic_trace_ctrl_fops were implemented separately to
gain a sense of uniformity.

All in all, I see no reason why you shouldn't forward this to the
proper authorities. Perhaps it won't be lost among the other incoming
contributions.
